VAT and corporate income tax are separate taxes in Indonesia, but VAT can affect taxable profit when it becomes part of an expense or asset cost. Output VAT is generally separate from revenue, while recoverable input VAT is generally separate from expenses.
The same transactions also appear across VAT, accounting, and corporate tax records, making their treatment relevant when the company reconciles its taxable income.
Does Output VAT Count as Revenue?
For a VAT-registered business, or PKP, VAT charged to customers on taxable sales is generally collected on behalf of the government and recorded separately from sales revenue.

For example, if a company sells goods for IDR 100 million (USD 5,650) before VAT, the IDR 100 million represents the sales value. VAT charged to the customer does not increase the company’s revenue.
Recording VAT-inclusive amounts as revenue without separating the VAT component can overstate revenue and create differences between the company’s VAT filings and corporate tax records.
When Does Input VAT Affect Profit?
Input VAT generally does not become an expense when the company is entitled to credit it against output VAT. Instead, it is recorded as a VAT credit or receivable.
Where input VAT cannot be credited, it may form part of the related expense or asset acquisition cost, subject to the corporate income-tax treatment of the underlying expenditure.
For example, where non-creditable VAT forms part of the cost of a depreciable asset, it can increase the asset’s acquisition cost and affect depreciation deductions over time.
This is one of the main ways VAT treatment can directly affect corporate taxable profit.
How Are VAT and Corporate Tax Records Reconciled?
VAT returns and corporate income tax returns report different taxes, so their figures do not need to be identical. However, both can contain information arising from the same transactions.
If VAT turnover does not reconcile with reported revenue, MAP Resources Indonesia can review the difference. Email info@mapresourcesindonesia.com
Sales reported for VAT purposes can be compared with accounting revenue and the revenue included in the company’s corporate income tax calculation.
Differences can arise because a transaction receives different VAT treatment, because VAT and accounting recognize it in different periods, or because accounting revenue includes an item outside the scope of VAT.
A clear reconciliation identifies which differences result from the applicable tax and accounting rules and which require correction.
Why Can VAT and Accounting Revenue Fall in Different Periods?
Accounting revenue and VAT do not always recognize a transaction at the same time.
Accounting revenue may depend on when the relevant performance obligation is satisfied, while VAT follows the rules determining when VAT becomes due and when the tax invoice must be issued.
A transaction can consequently appear in a VAT period different from the period in which revenue is recognized in the accounts. This does not by itself change the company’s taxable profit, but the timing difference should be identifiable during a tax audit.
How Do Cross-Border Transactions Affect VAT and Taxable Profit?
The use in Indonesia of taxable services or taxable intangible goods supplied from outside Indonesia can create Indonesian VAT obligations.

This can arise, for example, where an Indonesian company uses taxable services supplied by an overseas group company in Indonesia.
Whether VAT is payable or creditable does not by itself determine whether the underlying expense is deductible for corporate income tax purposes. Related-party transactions can also require separate support for the commercial basis and arm’s-length amount of the charge, alongside its cross-border VAT treatment.
A cross-border payment can consequently have separate VAT, corporate income-tax, withholding-tax, and transfer-pricing consequences.
What Happens When a VAT Error Is Corrected?
A VAT correction does not automatically require a change to accounting profit or corporate taxable income.
If the underlying transaction was also recorded incorrectly — for example, revenue was misstated or non-creditable VAT received the wrong accounting treatment — the accounting or corporate tax position may also need correction.
The required correction depends on whether the error is limited to VAT or also affects the underlying transaction recorded in the company’s accounts or tax return.
