How to Calculate Final Pay for Departing Employees in Indonesia

Final pay in Indonesia is calculated by adding salary already earned, outstanding employment rights, and any termination payment due based on how the employment ends.

What Must Be Included in an Employee’s Final Pay?

A final payment calculation can be structured as:

Outstanding salary + outstanding employment rights + applicable termination payments − tax and lawful deductions = final amount payable

Other amounts can include fixed allowances, unused annual leave that must be compensated, and benefits due under the employment contract, company regulations, or collective labor agreement.

How Does the Reason for Leaving Affect Final Pay?

An employee who voluntarily resigns is generally not entitled to the same statutory payments as an employee terminated by the employer but may still receive compensation of rights and separation pay where this is provided by the employment contract, company regulations, or collective labor agreement.

For employer-initiated termination, severance pay, service appreciation pay, and compensation of rights may apply. The calculation varies according to the termination ground.

An Indonesian employee who has worked continuously for at least one month under a fixed-term contract is generally entitled to compensation when the contract ends.

For 12 months of service, the compensation equals one month’s wage. Other periods are calculated proportionally:

Period of service ÷ 12 × one month’s wage

If a fixed-term contract ends before its agreed expiry date, the employee remains entitled to fixed-term compensation calculated according to the period already worked. Depending on the circumstances, separate obligations may also arise from ending the contract early.

How Are Severance and Service Appreciation Payments Calculated?

For an indefinite-term employee, length of service establishes the base severance amount.

Length of service Base severance
Less than 1 year 1 month’s wage
1 to less than 2 years 2 months’ wages
2 to less than 3 years 3 months’ wages
3 to less than 4 years 4 months’ wages
4 to less than 5 years 5 months’ wages
5 to less than 6 years 6 months’ wages
6 to less than 7 years 7 months’ wages
7 to less than 8 years 8 months’ wages
8 years or more 9 months’ wages

Employees with at least three years of service can also qualify for service appreciation pay.

Length of service Service appreciation pay
3 to less than 6 years 2 months’ wages
6 to less than 9 years 3 months’ wages
9 to less than 12 years 4 months’ wages
12 to less than 15 years 5 months’ wages
15 to less than 18 years 6 months’ wages
18 to less than 21 years 7 months’ wages
21 to less than 24 years 8 months’ wages
24 years or more 10 months’ wages

The severance amounts in the first table are minimum statutory amounts. The termination ground then determines the portion or multiple used to calculate the payment due, with compensation of rights added where applicable.

How the Final Pay Calculation Works in Practice

Consider an indefinite-term employee earning IDR 20 million (USD 1,200) per month who has completed six years of service.

The base severance amount is seven months’ wages:

7 × IDR 20 million = IDR 140 million (USD 8,400)

The employee also qualifies for three months of service appreciation pay:

3 × IDR 20 million = IDR 60 million (USD 3,600)

This produces a combined base figure of:

IDR 140 million + IDR 60 million = IDR 200 million (USD 12,000)

The employer then applies the portion or multiple required for the particular termination ground before adding any other outstanding amounts and deducting applicable tax.

The IDR 200 million (USD 12,000) is a calculation base, not automatically the employee’s final termination payment.

What Changes When the Departing Employee Is a Foreigner?

Foreign workers employed under fixed-term contracts are not entitled to the statutory fixed-term contract compensation payment available to Indonesian employees.

Salary already earned and contractual benefits must still be settled, which may include outstanding housing, relocation, return travel, or other expatriate benefits.

A foreign employee’s departure can also require the employer to close or update immigration and work authorization arrangements. If the employee is leaving Indonesia, their Indonesian tax position may also need to be settled.
